Web Port Scanning

A port scanner checks which services are listening on a server. For web servers, ensuring only necessary ports are open is a key security practice.

01

Why scan ports?

Open ports are potential entry points for attackers. Unnecessary ports (like database ports or old admin panels) exposed to the public internet increase your attack surface.

02

Common Web Ports

Port 80 (HTTP) and 443 (HTTPS) are standard for web traffic. Alternate ports like 8080 or 8443 are often used for testing. Other ports should generally be closed.

Standard Ports

Port 80

Standard unencrypted web traffic (HTTP). Should redirect to 443.

Port 443

Encrypted web traffic (HTTPS). The standard for secure web.

Port 8080

Alternative HTTP port. Often used for proxies or caching servers.

Port 8443

Alternative HTTPS port. Common in Tomcat or other app servers.
